“Why was my hair suddenly white?

mirror“What are you talking about? What’s wrong with my hair? Who cares about my hair anyway? What just happened to us Bentley?” He leaned up in the bed, instinctively running his hand through his hair. It felt normal, it was still there. What was she talking about? She gazed at him strangely, and then suggested: “Go look at yourself in the bathroom mirror. It’s incredible.”

Thinking that there must be something growing out of the side of his head, he flew out of bed and into the bathroom. He flicked on the light and stepped in front of the bathroom mirror. He thought his jaw would drop straight to the floor and shatter into a thousand pieces on the hard tile. All he could do was mumble the words: “Oh shit!”

What he found staring back at him was an image of himself, normal in every aspect except for one thing. His hair was completely white. Snow-white to be precise.

As he turned back towards the bedroom, the only thought running through his mind was: “Why was my hair suddenly white?”

Her voice rang with fear. Excerpt from Songs for Survival

fearIt was Beth who spoke the chilling words: “Do you think it was Best who was responsible for the earthquake in India and the tsunami in the Philippines?”

No one wanted to respond to Beth’s question, the magnitude behind it was too much to bear. The brief silence was broken by Bentley.

Bentley, her voice ringing with fear, whispered: “Where is Father O’Sullivan? We need him now more than ever. He holds the key to all of this. I feel there is something very powerful around him when I am in his presence. Can you believe how much he has changed?”

Sam responded: “He has left for Rome. When we left the mansion a few days ago, he instructed me to take him to LAX at once. He said he would be in touch then climbed out of the car and disappeared into the terminal. Something happened to him at the mansion that forced him to leave at once for Rome.”

Now he will destroy all of you. Excerpt from Songs for Survival

old red phone“Mr. Oakley, this is Avery Johnson. Thank you for taking my call. I…” He was interrupted by Oakley on the other end of the line before he could finish his last sentence.

“Avery, listen to me. Your life and the life of Ms. Paxton are in danger.”

Now Avery interrupted: “What are you talking about? My life is in danger? I called you to discuss the financial commitment you made with Vasallus.”

The voice on the other end of the line sounded scared and desperate: “Forget about my financial commitment. I could care less. I’m ruined anyway. He made sure of that. He will kill you. He will kill all of us.”

“Sherman, get a hold of yourself. What are you talking about? Who are you talking about?”

“Best, you fool! He’s destroyed my companies and now he will destroy all of you.”

A cold fear zinged through Avery’s body as he listened to Oakley. “Sherman, you are one of the most powerful businessmen in the world. How could Best ruin your companies?”

He was evil. Pure evil. Songs for Survival Excerpt

blazing red eyes of Patrick Benning The blazing red eyes of Patrick Benning sitting on the leather recliner in his living room scared him to the core; it was so unexpected; he struggled to find his breath. The boy was nothing like the charming kid he had just witnessed at the press conference. He was evil. Pure evil. He would die here in his home, either by the heart attack or from this creature.

In mere seconds, the Benning kid transformed himself into a hideous and monstrous entity. It flew out of the chair with incredible speed, its talon-like claws slammed into his chest and through his already dying heart. He felt the back of his head crack as the force of the blow sent the two of them into the wall. He felt his own blood erupt from his mouth like vomit. The burning red eyes of the creature from Hell bore into his and before his own eyes closed for the final time, he heard the beast scream out: “This is for thinking my talent was given to me by God. Die you old fool knowing the world you are leaving will never be the same. The Prince of Darkness, my God, will destroy it.”

As the final seconds of his life ebbed from his soul, Ted Lisko, the respected journalist from Rolling Stone magazine, took one final sound with him into his next life. The roaring and evil laughter of the beast echoed inside of his brain as the blackness of this life ending settled in.

Sam, get off of him! Excerpt from Songs for Survival

struggle“Sam, get off of him. Now!” It was Father O’Sullivan. His booming voice caught everyone off guard. Sam grudgingly stepped off of Avery before saying to him: “You’re lucky I didn’t shoot you.”

“Oh yea and you’re lucky I didn’t drive your head through that wall and leave you stuck there.”

Bentley stepped in between them, looked at Sam, and said: “Do you really think we had something to do with Elizabeth’s decision to leave Vasallus and the mansion?”

Sam was about to comment when he was interrupted by Father O’Sullivan: “Sam we must leave at once. Avery, Bentley, I’m sorry we must rush out of here, but I must go.”

Avery looked at Father O’Sullivan, stunned by his change in appearance and protested: “Please stay, Father. There is much we need to talk about.”

Thomas stepped out of the doorway and into the room and replied: “I agree Avery. There is much to discuss and a lot for you to know. Now, unfortunately, is not the time. I must leave for Rome at once. My apologies to you both, now Sam, if you will, we must leave.”

The government has taken notice. Excerpt from Songs for Survival

drink“Thank you for that flattering comment Mr. Best, I was just leaving.”

“Oh please stay for another drink with me. I insist that you do. And please call me Robert.”

“Okay Robert, I guess I could stay for a drink, but not here. It’s too packed and noisy. I know of a better place. It is not too far from here, just a few blocks. We can walk.”

Twenty minutes later they were sitting in a quiet booth in an upscale restaurant sipping a glass of wine when Best clinked her glass and said: “Here’s to your very talented daughter and Vasallus.”

“Talented maybe, but not so popular among some circles.”

“Oh, is that so? I can’t imagine anyone who wouldn’t love your daughter’s talent.”

“It seems that the government has taken notice of the success of Vasallus and the impact they are having on our youth. You’d better be careful Robert, they are taking a close look at the band. They are talking about censorship.”

“That is impossible! The government is a complete band of idiots, I swear. Finally a superstar band that sings about hope and courage and everything good for our young people and the government has a problem with that and yet it lets all the garbage fill the airwaves? Unbelievable.”

You’re different. You’ve changed. Book Excerpt from Songs of Survival

teaAnn struggled to find her voice as she stared at Father O’Sullivan: “Father, you have, I mean, you’re different. You’ve changed.”

He approached her and placed his hands on her arms, clutching them with a firm grip and replied: “Ann, I need to speak with you. I need to speak with all of you.” His eyes were ablaze with an indiscernible light. “Please everyone, let’s sit. We need to talk.”

It was Bethany who spoke next, stepping towards Father O’Sullivan, her face reflecting a look of shock and wonder: “Father, we can go and sit in the living room. May I get you something to drink or eat?”

He nodded at Beth, a smile stretching across his young face: “Tea would be wonderful Bethany. Thank you.”

You cannot go alone. It is too dangerous. Book Excerpt from Songs for Survival

it is too dangerous“I will come with you, Sam. You cannot go alone. It is too dangerous.”

“That is exactly why I will go alone. It is too dangerous for you, Ann. Stay here with Beth and Seb, where it is safe. When I return we will talk about what we will do next. Hopefully, we will have heard from Father O’Sullivan by then.”

Sam, I am going. For reasons I cannot explain, the demon is unable to harm me. I will be safe. Now let’s get going.”

Beth spoke next: “Maybe she’s right, Sam. You can’t go alone into that place. If Patrick can come in our home and almost kill all of us, God forbid what he can do in his own turf.”

He looked at his wife, ran his hand down the side of her face and reassured her: “I know you’re worried about me. Don’t be. I’ll be fine.” Looking at Ann, he continued: “Patrick almost assaulted you Ann, and would have likely killed you. I will not put you back in that situation again.”

Glad to see you’re back safe and sound – Book Excerpt from Songs for Survival

glad to see you're back safe and sound“Good morning Avery. Glad to see you’re back safe and sound.”

“Good morning Amber. Listen, I need to ask you something. Last night when I got home I bumped into Chloë. I noticed she was in a really quiet and somber mood. Very unlike her. How has she been this week in the studio? How have the others been?”

“Avery, the kids have not set foot in the studio all week, at least when I’ve been here.”

Alarmed, Avery responded: “What? Are you sure?”

“I’m very sure. Usually when I get in around 8:00 a.m., they are already in the studio, either in full rehearsal or individually rehearsing. I have not seen them all week. I thought maybe Mr. Best had them out of town or something. I don’t believe they were in at all during the night either, as the security system logs get faxed to me every morning as part of their service and no one has punched  a security code into the system all week, except for me, when I arrive in the morning and when I leave at 5:00 p.m.”

“That is very strange. Maybe you’re right and Best had them busy off-sight this week. Okay no problem, I’ll check with them back in the house. I’ll be back later on.”
