The introduction of another of the main character in the series, Father Thomas O’Sullivan:
He had stood at the doorway of the church office holding his two suitcases, about to descend the stairs and get into the waiting car belonging to the church deacon who would take him to the airport, struggling to find the words to say goodbye to Father O’Malley. A profound sense of sadness that he would be leaving this church so suddenly weighed down his soul. There was no joy in his heart at being dispatched to Rome. Father O’Malley placed his hands on either side of his shoulders, squeezing them in reassurance, and regarded Thomas with a sense of pride before he spoke.
“Do not be discouraged, Thomas. Whatever that letter contains, or whatever the purpose for summoning you to Rome is, I am sure it is God’s will. The Church needs you, Thomas, for a great purpose. Serve your Lord, Thomas, with your complete heart, mind and soul. I look forward to the day when you will come back here to this humble church and visit an old retired priest. Will you do that for me?” Father O’Malley smiled as he embraced Thomas, giving him a final hug.
“I will, Father. You have taught me well, and I will take your passion to serve with me, and instil it into whatever plan God has for me. You are a great man, Father, and you’ve been like a real father to me. I look forward to the day of my return, to sharing a cup of tea and making you laugh at the many stories I’ll be able to tell of adventures in our beloved Rome.”
